Frostings

Frosting the rim of the cocktail glass adds a special touch to the drink. Planned correctly, the frosting can add appeal to your whole theme. It can add texture to a smooth cocktail such as shredded coconut on the rim of a pina colada. Or play up the theme of the party like finely crushed peppermint candies on the rim of a holiday gathering.
The frosting can be achieved by moistening the rim of glass and then dipping the glass into the chosen ingredient. Many things can be used to moisten the rim, lemons and limes are probably the most popular. Lightly beaten egg whites can also be used however it is important to remember that there is a safety concern when using raw eggs*. Grenadine and honey are also good choices when using sugars or other sweet flavorings.
The sugar and coconut can both be colored with food coloring; making them perfect for party themes that are color driven.
Some frosting choices are:
- Salt
- Coco Powder
- Powdered instant Coffee
- Grated Chocolate
- Grated Nutmeg
- Super Fine Sugar
- Unsweetened Shredded Coconut (honey works well with this)
- Celery salt (outstanding with a Bloody Mary)
- Powdered sugar
- Crushes hard candies such as peppermints or jolly ranchers

*Always inform guests that raw eggs are being used. Raw eggs should never be used when serving to anyone who is pregnant or seriously ill, mothers who are nursing, or someone who has a weakened immune system.
