Run for the Roses

Celebrate the month of May with a Derby Party. What began in 1875 as a two minute race at Churchill Downs in Kentucky, has become a national celebration for race fans all over the country. From the nation’s largest annual fireworks display to the presentation of the Garland of Roses, the Derby Festival features an endless parade of special events for old and young alike.

Be sure to include some of the more entertaining events in your party plans. Have a hat parade of your own, one of the more popular events, with self-designed hats that can be both functional and frivolous. Kids can have their own version of the a Soap Box Race. And if you have a body of water near you (even a pool), the men can pit themselves against each other in a Steamboat Race with boats they make themselves, or anything else that floats.

Regardless of what the entertainment is, if the food is tasty and plentiful, everyone will leave feeling like they reached the winner’s circle. So pull out the southern hospitality, put on a funny hat, and create a menu they’ll be talking about for years to come.
